Dog Ear Cleaning: How to Clean Your Dog's Ears at Home
By PawPup Cafe Team · Updated October 8, 2026

Dog ear cleaning at home is simple: check the ears once a week, and when you see dirt or wax, wipe the visible parts gently with a vet-recommended ear cleaner and soft cotton wool. Never push anything deep into the ear canal. If the ears smell bad, look red or hurt your dog, stop and check with your vet.
This guide walks you through each step, the warning signs to watch for and the extra care some dogs need. It comes from the grooming team at our dog spa in Lucknow, where we have groomed more than 2,500 pets of every breed and size.
Why a dog’s ears need regular care
A dog’s ear canal is shaped like the letter L. It runs down and then bends inward, which means moisture and wax don’t drain out easily. When that space stays warm and damp, it becomes a comfortable home for yeast and bacteria. A quick weekly look lets you spot trouble while it is still small.
In most of India, heat and humidity make this worse. Ears that stay damp through a long summer or a wet monsoon need a little more attention than they would in a dry climate.
How to clean dog ears, step by step
Pick a calm moment, such as after a walk when your dog is tired. Keep treats close by and work in good light.
- Look first. Lift the ear flap and check the inside. A healthy ear is pale pink, with little or no smell and only a small amount of light-coloured wax.
- Use a gentle cleaner. Ask your vet to suggest an ear cleaner made for dogs. Avoid home remedies like oils, vinegar or hydrogen peroxide, which can sting.
- Soften the wax. Follow the cleaner’s directions, then massage the base of the ear for a few seconds. You may hear a soft squishing sound.
- Let your dog shake. Step back and let them shake their head. This brings loosened wax up to where you can reach it.
- Wipe what you can see. Wrap cotton wool or gauze around your finger and wipe the ear flap and the opening of the canal. Go only as deep as your finger comfortably reaches. No cotton buds.
- Reward and repeat. Give a treat, praise your dog, then do the other ear with a fresh piece of cotton.
If your dog pulls away, cries or tries to snap, stop. Pain during ear cleaning at home is a sign something is wrong inside the ear, and that needs a vet, not more cleaning.
Dog ear infection signs to watch for
Cleaning is for healthy ears. It is not a treatment. Check with your vet if you notice any of these:
- A strong, sour or yeasty smell
- Redness, swelling or heat inside the ear
- Brown, yellow or bloody discharge, or a lot of dark wax that keeps coming back
- Frequent head shaking, tilting the head to one side or scratching at one ear
- Crying or flinching when the ear is touched
- A puffy, swollen ear flap
Don’t put drops or medicines in a sore ear unless your vet prescribes them. Some problems, like a damaged eardrum, can be made worse by the wrong product.
Floppy ears, swimming and the monsoon
Floppy-eared breeds
Dogs with long, hanging ears, such as Cocker Spaniels, Beagles, Labradors and Golden Retrievers, get less air flow into the canal. Breeds with hairy ears, like the Shih Tzu, can also trap moisture and wax. These dogs usually benefit from more frequent checks. Our Golden Retriever grooming page covers how we look after their feathered ears during a session.
After a swim or bath
Water left in the ear is one of the most common triggers for problems. After every swim or bath, dry the ear flap and the opening of the canal with a soft towel, and let your dog shake. If your dog loves the water, our guide to dog swimming benefits and pool sessions explains how we dry dogs after every splash.
Monsoon months
Wet walks and muggy air keep ears damp for longer. During the rains, check your dog’s ears a little more often and dry them after every walk in the drizzle.
Dog ear cleaning at the groomer
Some dogs simply won’t sit still for ear care, and that’s fine. A groomer can do it quickly as part of a regular session. At PawPup Cafe, ear cleaning is included in the Pawpup Signature (Spa) and Pawpup Luxe (Full Groom) packages, so your dog gets clean ears along with a bath, blow dry and nail clipping. If our team spots anything unusual, we’ll let you know so you can check with your vet.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I clean my dog's ears?
Most dogs only need a look every week and a gentle wipe when you can see dirt or wax. Floppy-eared dogs and dogs that swim often may need it a little more often. Cleaning too much can irritate the skin, so if the ears look clean and smell normal, leave them alone.
Can I use cotton buds to clean my dog's ears?
It's best not to. A bud can push wax further down the canal or hurt the ear if your dog moves suddenly. Stick to cotton wool or soft gauze on the parts of the ear you can see, and never insert anything deep into the canal.
Is a bad smell from my dog's ears normal?
A healthy ear has very little smell. A strong, sour or yeasty smell, especially with redness, discharge or scratching, is one of the common dog ear infection signs. Don't try to treat it at home; check with your vet.
Does PawPup Cafe clean ears during grooming?
Yes. Ear cleaning is included in both the Pawpup Signature (Spa) and the Pawpup Luxe (Full Groom) packages at our Gomti Nagar studio, along with nail clipping, a sanitary trim and oral hygiene.
