Golden Retriever grooming is mostly about managing a thick double coat: a proper bath, a thorough blow dry, removing loose undercoat and a light tidy of the feathering, without shaving. For most Goldens we recommend the Pawpup Signature (Spa), with the Shed Relief add-on (₹400) when the hair is coming out in clumps.

Goldens are one of the most common breeds we see at our grooming spa in Gomti Nagar, and their coat has very specific needs in a city as hot and humid as Lucknow. Here’s how we care for it.

The Golden Retriever coat: two layers and a lot of feathering

A Golden has a soft, dense undercoat close to the skin and a longer, water-resistant outer coat on top. The longer “feathering” grows on the back of the legs, the chest, the belly, the tail and the ears. The undercoat sheds all year round and comes out in bigger amounts a couple of times a year, which is when your floors turn golden.

Feathering also tangles where things rub: behind the ears, under the collar and in the “trousers” on the back legs. Fur grows between the paw pads too, and it picks up mud and grass seeds on walks.

Why a Golden Retriever haircut should never mean a shave

When pet parents ask us for a Golden Retriever haircut before summer, they usually mean “please make my dog cooler.” Shaving a double coat is generally not recommended. The outer coat protects the skin from strong sun, and the undercoat, when it isn’t clogged with dead hair, lets air move close to the skin. A shaved coat can also grow back patchy or with a different texture.

What actually helps is getting the loose undercoat out so the coat can breathe, then neatening the feathering, tidying the paws and keeping the sanitary area clean. Your Golden still looks like a Golden, only lighter and fresher.

Heat, monsoon and a dog that loves water

In Lucknow’s summer, Goldens drop more undercoat than usual, and that dead hair traps warmth if it isn’t brushed out. During the monsoon the problem flips: the dense undercoat soaks up humidity and rain, and a coat that stays damp near the skin can start to smell and feel uncomfortable.

Most Goldens also can’t resist water. That’s why a full blow dry matters so much for this breed: it dries the undercoat right down to the skin and lifts out loose hair at the same time. Every Pool Splash at PawPup includes a blow dry, and our guide to dog swimming benefits and pool prices explains why a swim is such good exercise for retrievers.

How often to groom a Golden Retriever

  • At home: brush two or three times a week, and daily during heavy shedding. Our dog de-shedding guide covers the brushes and routine that help.
  • Every four to six weeks: a spa bath with conditioner, blow dry, nails, ears and hygiene trim.
  • Every week: check the ears. Golden ears are floppy and furry, so they hold warmth and moisture. Read our dog ear cleaning guide for how to clean them at home.

Mickey’s glow-up

Mickey, a golden retriever, came to us for a bath and blow dry. The difference in how his coat sits and shines is what a clean, fully dried double coat looks like.

Huskies have an even thicker double coat and face the same no-shave rule; see our Siberian Husky grooming page if you share your home with one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Golden Retriever grooming price at PawPup Cafe?

We recommend the Pawpup Signature (Spa), which costs ₹700 to ₹1,600 depending on your dog's size, incl. taxes. Add Shed Relief for ₹400 during heavy shedding. We confirm your dog's size, and so the final price, when you book.

Should I shave my Golden Retriever to keep it cool?

Shaving a double coat is generally not recommended. The coat shields the skin from sun and helps regulate temperature, and it can grow back uneven. Clearing out the loose undercoat and keeping the feathering tidy does far more for comfort in the heat.

Can my Golden swim and get groomed on the same day?

Yes, and many Goldens love it. Every Pool Splash includes a blow dry, and if you book a pool session together with a spa package you get 10% off the Pool + Spa combo.

Book your Golden's spa day

Let us know if your Golden is shedding heavily or needs a feathering tidy, and we'll confirm the price for your dog's size and a slot that works for you.
