Why cats need grooming too
Cats are famous for keeping themselves clean, so it’s easy to assume they never need help. But a cat’s tongue can’t reach everything. Long coats knot behind the ears and under the legs, loose hair gets swallowed and comes back up as hairballs, and older or heavier cats often stop reaching their backs and hind quarters at all.
Lucknow’s long summers and sticky monsoon make this harder. A thick coat holds heat and damp, and indoor cats shed through much of the year. A regular groom keeps the coat light and clean, and gives someone a chance to notice lumps, fleas or sore skin early.
What a cat groom covers, part by part
Coat and brushing
Brushing comes first. It lifts out dead undercoat, loosens small tangles before they tighten and spreads natural oils through the fur. For a long-haired cat this is the most important step, because water makes any existing knot much harder to undo.
Bath and dry
Not every cat needs a bath every time. When a wash is right, it’s done with lukewarm water and a cat-safe shampoo, then the coat is towelled and dried thoroughly so your cat doesn’t go home damp. A cat bath in Lucknow’s humid months is only worth having if the drying is done properly.
Nails
Indoor cats don’t wear their claws down the way outdoor cats do. Overgrown nails can curl, snag on fabric or catch in carpets. A careful trim takes off the sharp tip while staying well away from the pink quick.
Ears and eyes
The outer ear is checked and gently wiped, and any crust around the eyes is cleaned with a soft, damp pad. Flat-faced breeds often need this most. Redness, a strong smell or discharge isn’t something grooming can fix, so we’ll point it out and you can check with your vet.

Long-haired vs short-haired cats
Coat length changes what grooming looks like more than anything else.
- Long-haired cats such as Persians, Himalayans and Maine Coons have soft, fine fur that mats quickly, especially in the armpits, belly and behind the ears. Persian cat grooming usually means regular brushing, eye cleaning and a bath now and then to keep the coat from clumping.
- Short-haired cats, including most Indian street cats and breeds like the British Shorthair and Siamese, rarely tangle. They still shed, and a brush-out with a nail trim keeps loose hair off your sofa and out of their stomach.
Preparing your cat for a groom
- Bring your cat in a secure carrier with a familiar towel or blanket inside.
- Leave the carrier out at home for a few days beforehand so it feels less strange.
- Keep the morning calm and avoid a large meal just before you leave.
- Make sure your cat’s core vaccinations are up to date.
- Tell us if your cat is nervous, has been groomed before, or dislikes being handled in a particular place.
Signs your cat needs a groom
- Clumps or knots you can feel under the fur, often near the legs or tail.
- A greasy, spiky or dull-looking coat along the back.
- More hairballs than usual, or hair everywhere at home.
- Claws catching on furniture or clicking on the floor.
- Dried tear stains or crust in the corners of the eyes.
If you’ve noticed two or three of these, it’s a good time to book. Have questions first? Send us a message on WhatsApp.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you groom Persian cats?
Yes. Persians and other long-haired cats are some of the cats that benefit most from regular grooming, because their soft coats tangle easily. Tell us about any knots when you book so we can plan the session.
Does my cat need a bath, or is brushing enough?
Many short-haired cats manage well with regular brushing and only need an occasional bath. Long-haired cats, older cats and cats that have got into something sticky or smelly often need a proper wash. We can suggest what suits your cat when you visit.
Can I stay while my cat is groomed?
Yes. You are welcome to wait in our cafe with a coffee or a meal while your cat is groomed, and cats are welcome in the cafe too.
Where can I find a cat groomer in Lucknow?
PawPup Cafe is at 3/31, Vinay Khand 3, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow, close to Indira Nagar, Mahanagar and Aliganj. Grooming runs every day from 10AM to 8PM.
What if my cat has a skin problem or is unwell?
Please tell us about any sores, flaking, bald patches or recent illness before the groom. Grooming is not a treatment, so for health problems check with your vet first.
