Full Dog Grooming Steps: What Happens in a Full Dog Groom
By PawPup Cafe Team · Updated October 8, 2026

A full dog groom covers your dog from nose to tail: the coat is brushed, bathed, conditioned, dried and cut, then the face, ears, nails, paws and teeth are looked after before a final spritz of perfume. Those are the full dog grooming steps most salons in India follow, though exactly what your dog gets depends on the package you book.
Below we go through each step in the order it usually happens at our grooming spa in Gomti Nagar, and show which PawPup Cafe package includes it, so you know what you are paying for.
Full dog grooming steps, in order
1. Brushing and knots
The dog grooming process starts with a dry coat. Brushing lifts dead hair and shows up tangles before any water touches the dog, because wet knots tighten and become much harder to undo. Light tangles come out with a brush and comb. Heavier knots are handled as add-ons: Knot Removal (₹200) or Knot Buster (₹500). Our matted dog hair guide explains how mats form and how to prevent them.
2. Shampoo and conditioner
Next comes the bath. Shampoo lifts dirt, oil and loose hair down to the skin, and a thorough rinse makes sure nothing is left behind to itch. Conditioner follows, softening the coat so it dries more evenly and is easier to cut. For dogs with skin trouble, a Neem Bath (₹250) or Medicated Bath (₹350) is available; for any ongoing skin problem, check with your vet first.
3. Blow dry
A thick coat left to air-dry can stay damp close to the skin, which is uncomfortable in humid weather. A blow dry dries the coat right through and fluffs it out, which also lets the groomer see the true length before cutting.
4. Haircut
With the coat clean and straight, the groomer trims the body to the length and shape you want. This is the step that turns a spa into a full groom, and the main reason long and curly coats need one.
5. Face shaping
Hair around the eyes, muzzle and head is shaped so your dog can see clearly and the face looks tidy. It is careful scissor work close to the eyes, which is why many pet parents leave it to a groomer.
6. Ear cleaning
The outer ear is wiped free of wax and dirt. Floppy-eared dogs trap warmth and moisture, so they benefit most. Our dog ear cleaning guide shows how to keep ears clean at home between visits.
7. Nail clipping
Overgrown nails change the way a dog stands and walks. They are clipped short while staying clear of the quick, the living core of the nail. For trims between grooms, see our dog nail trimming guide.
8. Paw shaping
Hair between the pads and around the feet is trimmed neat, so it collects less dirt and your dog is less likely to slip on smooth floors.
9. Sanitary trim
Hair around the private areas and under the tail is kept short. It is a small step that makes a big difference to everyday hygiene.
10. Oral hygiene
The teeth and mouth get a basic clean. This is routine hygiene, not dental treatment. If you notice bad breath, red gums or a broken tooth, check with your vet.
11. Perfume
The groom finishes with a light spritz of perfume, and your dog is ready to go home.
What is included in dog grooming at each package
Not every package covers every step. Here is how they map at PawPup Cafe:

- Pawpup Signature (Spa), ₹700 to ₹1,600: the same steps without the haircut.
- Pawpup Mini Groom, ₹900 to ₹2,000: facial, ear and paw shaping, for a tidy between full grooms.
- Express Bathing (Refresher), ₹600 to ₹1,000: a quick shampoo and blow dry only.
- Essentials: Face Shaping ₹350, Paw Shaping ₹200, Nail Clipping ₹200 and Neem Bath ₹250, booked alone or added to a package.
So for a haircut plus a neat face and feet, pair the Luxe with Face Shaping and Paw Shaping. The price for each size is set out in our dog grooming price guide.
Dog spa steps or a full groom: which does your dog need?
If your dog has a short coat that never needs cutting, the Signature Spa covers every hygiene step. If the coat grows long, curls or tangles easily, the haircut in the Luxe is what keeps it comfortable and manageable. And if your dog simply needs to be clean after a muddy walk or a swim, Express Bathing is enough.
Getting your dog ready for a full groom
- Make sure core vaccinations are up to date. We require them for every dog.
- Take your dog for a short walk and a toilet break before the appointment.
- Tell the groomer about sore spots, skin issues or anything your dog dislikes.
- Book ahead if you can, especially for a weekend slot.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in dog grooming at PawPup Cafe?
It depends on the package. The Pawpup Luxe (Full Groom) includes a haircut, shampoo, conditioner, blow dry, nail clipping, ear cleaning, sanitary trim, oral hygiene and perfume. The Pawpup Signature Spa includes the same steps without the haircut, and Express Bathing is a quick shampoo and blow dry.
Does a full groom include face and paw shaping?
Face Shaping (₹350) and Paw Shaping (₹200) are essentials you can add to any package or book on their own. The Pawpup Mini Groom also covers facial, ear and paw shaping, which suits dogs that need a tidy between full grooms.
Why is the coat brushed before the bath?
Water tightens tangles, so a knot that brushes out easily when dry can turn into a stubborn mat once wet. Brushing first also loosens dead hair so the shampoo reaches the skin. Heavy knots are handled with the Knot Removal (₹200) or Knot Buster (₹500) add-ons.
Can I wait while my dog is groomed?
Yes. At PawPup Cafe you can wait in our pet-friendly cafe with a coffee or a meal while your dog goes through its groom.
