A puppy first grooming session should be short, calm and positive, because how that first visit feels shapes how your dog reacts to grooming for years. Start with a gentle bath and blow dry rather than a full haircut, and practise handling at home beforehand. Before you book, check with your vet about when your puppy’s vaccinations are complete.

At PawPup Cafe we groom all breeds and sizes, and core vaccinations are required before any pup can be groomed, swim or use the play area. This guide is for new pet parents anywhere in India; if you are near us, you can see every package on our page for puppy and dog grooming in Lucknow.

Why puppy first grooming matters

Everything about a grooming table is new to a puppy: the sound of a dryer, the feel of a brush, a stranger lifting its paws. A good first experience teaches your puppy that grooming is safe and even pleasant. A frightening one can leave a dog nervous about baths and nail trims for the rest of its life. For long-coated breeds that will need regular haircuts, this matters even more.

Preparing your puppy at home

The work starts well before the appointment. A few minutes a day is enough:

  • Gently touch your puppy’s paws, ears, tail and mouth, and reward calm behaviour with a small treat.
  • Brush with a soft brush for a minute or two, even if the coat is still short.
  • Let your puppy hear a hairdryer on a low setting from across the room, so the noise becomes ordinary.
  • Touch the nail clippers to each nail without cutting, so the sensation is familiar.
  • Practise standing still on a raised, non-slip surface for a few seconds at a time.

Your puppy’s first bath

A puppy bath at home is a useful rehearsal. Use lukewarm water and a shampoo made for dogs, since products meant for people can irritate a dog’s skin. Wet the body first, keep water away from the eyes and ears, and rinse until no suds remain. Then dry your puppy completely with a towel and, if it is calm, a dryer on low. Bathe only when your puppy actually needs it, and if you notice dry, flaky or red skin, check with your vet.

Puppy haircut: when it makes sense

Most puppies don’t need a full haircut on their first visit. A light tidy around the eyes, paws and sanitary area keeps them clean and comfortable while they get used to the experience. As the coat grows, long-coated breeds will need regular cuts; our Shih Tzu grooming page shows what that looks like for one of the most popular long-coated breeds.

At PawPup Cafe, every package has a Puppy size price, including taxes: Express Bathing ₹600, Pawpup Signature ₹700, Pawpup Mini Groom ₹900 and Pawpup Luxe ₹1,200. For a first visit, a bath or the Signature Spa is usually the gentlest start.

Grooming a puppy for the first time at a salon

  • Book ahead rather than walking in. Walk-ins are welcome, but weekends get busy, and a quieter slot is easier for a young dog.
  • Take your puppy for a short walk and a toilet break before you arrive.
  • Bring the vaccination record, since core vaccinations are required.
  • Tell the groomer anything useful: spots your puppy doesn’t like being touched, recent illness, or anything your vet has mentioned.
  • Stay close. At PawPup Cafe you can wait in the cafe while your puppy is groomed.

After the groom

Praise your puppy and end the visit on a happy note. You could round off the day with a fresh bowl from our dog food menu, such as the Yogurt Bowl (₹150) or Egg Rice Bowl (₹180); check with your vet before giving a young puppy any new food. Between visits, keep an eye on nails, which can grow quickly. Our guide to trimming dog nails shows how to do it safely at home.

The goal of the first groom is not a perfect look. It is a puppy that walks out relaxed and happy to come back next time.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can my puppy have its first groom?

Check with your vet about when your puppy’s vaccinations are complete. At PawPup Cafe, core vaccinations are required before any dog can be groomed, use the pool or join the play area, so bring your puppy’s vaccination record along.

How much does a puppy groom cost at PawPup Cafe?

Every package has a Puppy size price, including taxes: Express Bathing ₹600, Pawpup Signature ₹700, Pawpup Mini Groom ₹900 and Pawpup Luxe ₹1,200. Nail Clipping on its own is ₹200.

Should my puppy get a haircut on its first visit?

Usually not. A gentle bath and blow dry, with a light tidy if needed, is a calmer introduction. A full puppy haircut can come later, once your puppy is relaxed about being handled and the coat actually needs it.

Can I bathe my puppy at home before the first groom?

Yes. Use lukewarm water and a shampoo made for dogs, keep water out of the ears and eyes, rinse well and dry your puppy fully. If your puppy has any skin problem, check with your vet first.
