Shih Tzu grooming works best as a full groom with a haircut every four to six weeks, with brushing at home and a quick face and paw tidy in between. At PawPup Cafe in Gomti Nagar, the Pawpup Luxe (Full Groom) covers the haircut, bath, blow dry, nails, ears and hygiene trim in one visit.

That long, silky coat looks lovely, but it never stops growing, so it needs regular professional help. This page explains how we approach the breed. For every package and price we offer, see our main page on dog grooming in Lucknow.

What makes a Shih Tzu’s coat different

A Shih Tzu has a double coat: a soft undercoat beneath a long, flowing top coat. Unlike a Labrador or a Husky, the hair keeps growing rather than shedding out in seasons. Loose hairs get caught in the coat instead of falling on your floor, which is why a Shih Tzu can tangle so quickly.

The hair on the face grows too. Left alone, it falls into the eyes, holds food around the mouth and gets damp under the chin. Hair inside and around the ears and between the paw pads needs regular trimming as well.

Shih Tzu coat problems in Lucknow’s heat and monsoon

In the summer months, a full-length coat traps warmth close to the body and gets heavy and greasy fast. Many pet parents in Lucknow switch to a shorter, even cut from April to June so their dog stays comfortable and brushing takes minutes instead of an hour.

The monsoon brings a different problem: humidity. A coat that stays slightly damp after a walk in the rain tangles into tight knots behind the ears, under the legs, along the collar line and on the belly. Beards and feet stay wet too, which can lead to a musty smell. Our guide to matted dog hair explains how small tangles turn into mats and how to catch them early.

How often to groom a Shih Tzu

  • At home: brush right down to the skin every day or every other day, using a comb to check that no knots are hiding underneath.
  • Every four to six weeks: a full groom with haircut, bath, conditioner and blow dry.
  • In between: a face, ear and paw tidy once the hair starts covering the eyes or the feet look shaggy.

Shih Tzu haircut options

There is no single correct Shih Tzu haircut. A short all-over cut is the easiest to live with in the Indian heat. A slightly longer body with a rounded “teddy bear” face keeps the classic look with less upkeep. A long coat is possible, but only if you can brush it every day. Tell us how your dog lives, and we’ll suggest a length.

The haircut comes as part of the Pawpup Luxe, along with shampoo, conditioner, blow dry, nail clipping, ear cleaning, sanitary trim, oral hygiene and perfume. If you’d like to know what each step involves, read what happens in a full dog groom.

Other options that suit this coat:

  • Pawpup Mini Groom (₹900 to ₹2,000): facial, ear and paw shaping. Ideal halfway between full grooms, when the face and feet have grown out but the body still looks neat.
  • Knot Removal (₹200) and Knot Buster (₹500), added when the coat has tangles.

Eyes, ears and face care between visits

Keep the hair around the eyes short or tied up so it doesn’t rub. Wipe the corners of the eyes and the beard gently with a soft, damp cloth, then dry them. Shih Tzus have hairy ear canals that hold moisture, so look inside the ears every week; our dog ear cleaning guide shows how to clean them safely. If you see redness, discharge or your dog keeps scratching, check with your vet.

Long silky coats need a very different routine from double-coated shedders. If you also have a bigger dog at home, see our tips on Golden Retriever grooming.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Shih Tzu grooming price at PawPup Cafe?

Most Shih Tzus come in for the Pawpup Luxe (Full Groom), which costs ₹1,200 to ₹3,000 depending on your dog's size, incl. taxes. The Pawpup Mini Groom for face, ear and paw shaping costs ₹900 to ₹2,000. We confirm your dog's size, and so the final price, when you book.

Should I shave my Shih Tzu for the Lucknow summer?

A short, even trim is a popular summer choice and makes daily brushing much easier. Shaving right down to the skin is usually avoided, because a little coat still protects the skin from sun. Tell us how short you'd like it and we'll suggest a length that suits your dog.

My Shih Tzu's coat is full of knots. Can you still groom it?

Yes. We check the coat before we start and tell you if Knot Removal (₹200) or Knot Buster (₹500) is needed on top of the package. If the coat is very tightly matted, a shorter haircut is often kinder than brushing it all out.

Book your Shih Tzu's groom

Tell us how short you'd like your Shih Tzu's coat and whether there are any knots, and we'll confirm the package, the price for your dog's size and a time that suits you.
